Note 44.296 MOUNT-L 296 of 517 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 22 lines 27-JAN-1994 08:33 CUPIDO::STRITAR "Andrej Stritar,IJS,(61)-371-321" 22 lines 27-JAN-1994 08:33 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subj: RE: Black flies and Appalachian trail networks Date: 25-Jan-1994 Posted-date: 25-Jan-1994 While I can't respond to hiking the Appalachian Trail, I can respond to dealing with black flies. They actually bight with sawing mouth parts as opposed to sting, puncture, etc. Hungry as they may be, many people have had success with applying the Avon product Skin-So-Soft either at full or partial strength. I live in an area with black flies and travel to the Adirondacks, Canada, and Maine where large numbers of black flies torment the unprepared. While I don't think they travel in swarms, they do hatch in large numbers. Mid-May through mid-June can be particulariy nasty times in the northern areas the AT passes through. I use Skin-So-Soft (SOS) at home and when backpacking and canoeing in these areas with really good results. Marc Connolly
