I need to echo the virtues of climbing walls made with wooden holds.
It seems that once you learn to do a route with these the rock's friction
is so much higher it seems to be a breeze. Wooden holds also have the
distinct advantage of being much cheaper (we used scraps of wood from
construction sites around town).
Also regarding the changing of routes, why not just put up lots of holds,
name them and then note the routes you take up them; thereby setting up
lots of bouldering type problems on one wall. I climb at a local wall where
the other climbers have written down the routes in a notebook so folks like
me (relative beginners) can look up the route and practice on them. They have
color coded the routes for difficulty too.
Just my $.02 worth,
tom
