The Climbers and Hikers Guide to the Sandia Mountains by Mike Hill, UNM
Press, will tell you about possibilities in the Albuquerque area. The
Sangre de Cristo mountains in northern NM include the state high point,
Wheeler Peak, which is a little over 13,000'--easiest access is via the
Taos Ski Valley. The Santa Fe Ski area provides access to several
+12,000' peaks. There are the Jemez Mountains near Los Alamos,
the Organ Mountains near Las Cruces, the White Mountains near Ruidoso,
and Mt. Taylor, another 13,000' peak, near Grants. On any NM climb,
remember to take the 11th essential--tweezers. You can expect cactus on
the holds up to the 9,000' level.
