Subject: Re: winter in new england
hey patrick! as a true northerner temporarily living in Louisiana, it's
refreshing to hear someone talk about winter camping again - i've done a fair
amount in montana and alaska, and even a little in massachusetts (where i
grew up). my recommendation for your first trip is that you not get
overambitious - if you realize you've forgotten something, or your
sleeping bag ain't quite warm enough, you'd probably like the option
to wimp out and head back to the car (you don't have to tell anyone!!).
anyway, as for snowshoes - yes, you want them - and if you're carrying
a heavy pack (which you ought to be doing if you're camping in the winter!)
don't go with those short stubby sherpa snowshoes - i've found the alaska
style ones are much better - even they leave you sinking to your thighs
occasionally in soft snow. also, it's great to have a ski pole or two with
you for balance. the shoes aren't that hard to get used to, but you'll
obviously expend more energy than you would on solid ground.
as for temps in the white mountains - maybe someone else in that region
can provide a more authoritative answer, but my guess is anywhere between
30 below and 40 above, depending on the current frontal movements. if there's
a bitter cold front, you're sometimes better off at higher elevations above
the cold air settling in the lowlands.
anyway, have fun, and let us all know how your trip goes!
